OUR VENOMOUS SNAKES

* Inland Taipan - This is the worlds most venomous snake and is found in South West Queensland, North East South Australia and far North NSW. Their main food source is the long haired rat. Which lives in the crack of the ground. The Inland Taipan is one of the only snake that has a seasonal colouration, which means their colours change from summer to winter, they are a chocolate brown in winter and in the summer they are a golden yellow all over there body, but some times they might have a black flecks over the golden yellow with a tinge of black on there head.

* Eastern Brown - Also known has the common Brown snake it comes 2nd on the top ten list. They are found right through Australia from forests to to deserts. they feed on rats and mice also skinks. The problem with Eastern Brown snakes is its food source, being the mouse, so if we have bird aviaries, sheds and compost heaps, then we have mice around, mice leave a scent trail behind and the Eastern Brown follows the scent trails into our backyard. There are over 3 thousand people that has been bitten by snakes every year and 2/3 of them have been by the Eastern Brown snake, so over 2 thousand people have been bitten by this particular snake.

Coastal Taipan- The Coastal Taipan is orange/brownish and has a long pale head. It is found from Nth Kimberleys, WA through to NTHN NT to NTHN Queensland and down the eastern cost to Grafton. The Taipan has the longest fangs of our Australian snakes, they are about 12mm long its is also the longest venomous snake in Australia growing 3 metres long. Its is number 3 on the worlds most venomous list but is one of the most dangerous snakes in the world.

* Eastern Tiger Snake  - This snake comes in at number 4 in venomous snakes. It is found down the eastern side of Australia, Tiger snake feeds on frogs and other Reptiles. The Tiger snake gives more warnings then any other snake in Australia. When threaten it will flatten its neck to make its self look bigger it will also let out a bark or cough so we will know that its there. And it will sometimes strike at nothing to warn us if we get any closer it will bite.

* Common Death Adder- Listed has the 9th most venomous snake in Australia the Common Death Adder is found through the eastern parts of Australia. They feed on mice, lizards and small birds. The good thing about the Death Adder is that you all most have to stand on it or pick it up for the Death Adder to strike at you.

* King Brown:/Mulga Snake  - The King Brown is not a brown snake at all so it does not deserve the name King Brown, It is now called the Mulga Snake. The Mulga Snake is a member of the Black snake family it   grows to 2.5 meters long if feeds on other reptiles and small mammals. The Mulga Snake is found wide spread throughout Australia, excepting humid eastern and southern areas. The Mulga Snake produces more venom of one bite then any other snake that we have in Australia.

The Red Bellied Black snake is often found in moist areas such as river banks and swamps.  Its main food source is frogs but the Red Bellied Black snake is also a cannibal. Where we find a higher number of Red Bellied Black snake we seem to find a lower number of Brown snakes  so these snakes are classed as one of the good guys of the bush.

* Spotted Mulga - There are only three of these snakes reported in captivity in NSW and we are lucky enough to have one of them. It is a member of the Black snake family and it is found in a small area of Western Australia but they are very hard to find.
